Developing Human Capital to Improve Urban Education: Challenges and Opportunities
Chapin Hall partnered with the W. Clement and Jessie V. Stone Foundation to host a convening for the Stone Foundation Education Grantees in October of 2008. The purpose of the convening was to gather key leaders in the education field for a discussion of the lessons learned in their work and how these lessons inform future practice and policy opportunities. This report highlights key points from this discussion. Specifically, the group identified three common challenges to innovation -- taking individual programs to scale; meeting needs for organizational capacity and development in order to implement reforms; and undertaking meaningful assessment and evaluation of education reforms. This report describes the nature of the grantees’ work, provides a summary of the discussion surrounding these challenges, and discusses the importance of allowing time for collective reflection and knowledge building.
