Anne Blumenthal

Harold A. Richman Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Anne Blumenthal is the Harold A. Richman Postdoctoral Fellow at Chapin Hall and the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice. Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches to answer questions related to structural determinants of child well-being, the overarching motivation of Dr. Blumenthal’s research efforts is to inform policy conversations on concrete supports for marginalized families. Her current research portfolio includes projects that: aim to increase enrollment of child welfare involved children in early childhood education programs, assess home visiting program quality, and aim to increase low-income children in home-based daycare’s participation in federal food assistance program. Other ongoing work examines correlates of accidental injury deaths of young children between 2000 and 2020 and the demography of children’s time use from 2014 to 2020.

Prior coming to Chapin Hall, Blumenthal worked at the University of Michigan where she worked on research projects related to asset building for young children, poverty in the wake of the Great Recession, and theoretical work on child neglect. At McGill, she worked as a coordinator of the Canadian Child Welfare Research Portal and on a project documenting the government’s implementation of Jordan’s Principle, a child-first principle intended to ensure equity in health and social services for First Nations children. She worked in direct social services in both the U.S. and Canada before beginning a career in social research.

Blumenthal holds a PhD in Social Work and Sociology from The University of Michigan and a Master of Social Work from McGill University.
