Caleb Schaffner

Researcher and Data Engineer

Dr. Caleb Schaffner is a Researcher and Data Engineer at Chapin Hall. Across multiple projects, he creates code that cleans and processes child welfare data from a variety of sources and time frames, allowing for the analysis over time and across areas. He also conducts quantitative research aimed at improving outcomes for children and families, as well as maintaining detailed codebooks to further systematize analysis across child welfare systems for internal and external researchers.

Prior to joining Chapin Hall, Schaffner worked as a research scientist at the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. His work there entailed creating systems which streamlined and systematized the processing of victimization and criminology data. He also conducted research with data from domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers. Schaffner trained and assisted individual victim service providers to use their data for organizational decision making. He also taught Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, North Central College, and Northeastern Illinois University.

Schaffner holds a PhD and Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a concentration in Race, Ethnicity, and Gender and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Northern Illinois University.
